Spring 2017 | Of Color
During the Spring 2017 semester, the following sixteen students of Art 137: Race & Identity: Artists' Books seminar at Scripps College studied artists' books that explored issues of race and identity under the direction of Professor Tia Blassingame: Monica A. Acosta, Madeline Luisa De La Cancela, Catherine Ashley Glah, Charlotte Hyde, Anisha Tara Kaul, Olivia Kohn, Sahana Prakash Mehta, Eden Rose Niles, Mason E. Polk, Grace Reckers, Sarah Maria Sanchez, Zara K Singh, Emma Stolarski, Deena Ann Woloshin, and Laura Mae Woods.
These students—from Scripps, Pitzer, and Pomona Colleges—crafted questions to ask of all artists and of all non-artists including librarians, collectors and booksellers. Interviewees included: Islam Aly, Andre Bradley (Spring 2017 Frederic W. Goudy lecturer), Irene Chan (Fall 2016 Frederic W. Goudy lecturer), Mark Dimunation (Chief of the Rare Book and Special Collections Division at the Library of Congress), Nabil Gonzalez, Sakura Kelley, Allison Milham, Katherine Ng, Monica Oppen (proprietor of Bibliotheca Librorum apud Artificem in Sydney, Australia), Jessica Peterson, Alison Saar, Judy Sahak (Emerita Librarian of Scripps College's Ella Strong Denison Library), Jaime Lynn Shafer, Clarissa Sligh, Bill and Vicky Stewart (Vamp & Tramp Booksellers) and Tona Wilson.
